Lossy vs Lossless Compression
There are two primary categories of digital audio formats:
- Lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG): Removes sound frequencies that the average human ear cannot easily detect. This produces lightweight files that are perfect for mobile phones and web downloads.
- Lossless (FLAC, ALAC, WAV): Retains 100% of the original studio recording data. Files are large (30MB to 70MB per song) and require high-end audio DACs and open-back headphones to appreciate the difference.

- MP3: Universal compatibility. Plays on everything from a 2005 car stereo to a 2026 smartwatch.
- AAC: Modern replacement for MP3 adopted by Apple Music and YouTube. Delivers slightly higher fidelity at lower bitrates.
- FLAC: The gold standard for audiophile archives and studio preservation.
- WAV: Uncompressed raw audio created by Microsoft and IBM, standard in professional music production software (DAWs).
